The Best Rhubarb Ever!

Like most communities, our small town of Escanaba has a farmers market. It’s nothing fancy or elaborate like the ones you’ll find in big cities — but it’s ours. Farmers markets are a great place to pick up local produce, handmade crafts, fresh bread and jam, and all sorts of other treasures our local neighbors have to offer. More than that, they’re a meeting place for the community to gather.

Did you know?

  • There are over 8,700 farmers markets in the United States.

  • They boost the local economy by supporting small farms and keeping money in the community.

  • Approximately $1.7 billion in U.S. agricultural sales come from farmers markets and on-farm stores.

This past weekend, my two daughters asked if I wanted to join them for a trip to our local market. I don’t go often, but I had the morning free, so I grabbed my camera and tagged along. It was a beautiful Saturday, and I’m glad I went.

During our visit, I came across two older gentlemen selling rhubarb. One of them, with a long white beard and a baseball cap, had the kind of face photographers love. I asked if I could take his photo, and he kindly agreed. Not only did I come away with a great shot but I also left with some incredible rhubarb. Maybe he was Santa in disguise.

How about you — are you a regular at your local farmers market? If not, it’s worth a visit. You never know what you’ll find. As for that rhubarb? Easily the best purchase of the day. My wife turned it into a delicious rhubarb crisp for our Sunday dessert. Maybe next week, the blueberries will be ready…
